Violet-Necked Lories

Violet-Necked Lory Eos squamata squamata 10.5" (27cm), Mainly red with variable violet-blue collar; abdomen and undertail purple; tail purple-red above and red-grey below; scapulars dull purple, tipped with black; greater wing coverts and flight feathers red, tipped with black; primaries black.
Distinguishing features Violet collar reaching the hind crown prevents confusion with the Obi Lory (E.s. obiensis) which lacks this.
Currently thought probably safe concerning numbers, as the result of recent fieldwork which has been done with two of the subspecies. More work is called for with the nominate bird which is well established in captivity.
